For those who provide moderate (conscious) sedation, there are substantial changes coming. All instructions and codes change for dates of service on and after January 1, 2017. Codes 99143–99145 and 99148–99150 (Table 1) will be deleted in Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) 2017.

CPT 2017 does not include the target symbol (⦿) previously applied to all CPT codes that were valued to include moderate sedation or Appendix G (listing of the codes for services that include moderate sedation). Moderate sedation will no longer be a component of the relative value assigned to procedures that may be performed under moderate sedation and is a separately reported service when time and other coding requirements are met.
