Since the transition to International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) in October 2015, a few questions about insect bites have been asked on multiple occasions. These include
ICD-10-CM guidelines offer no direct guidance for these questions. However, this article will address each question based on general coding guidelines and conventions.
Code T07, unspecified multiple injuries, is a nonspecific code that should rarely be used. ICD-10-CM guidelines instruct, “When coding injuries, assign separate codes for each injury unless a combination code is provided, in which case the combination code is assigned.”
Based on the guideline instructing to report separate codes for each injury, separate codes would be reported for each affected body site. ICD-10-CM does not provide a combination code for indicating insect bites to multiple sites.
