In the May 2016 AAP Pediatric Coding Newsletter™, “Coding for Mental/Behavioral Health Professionals in the Medical Home” (https://coding.solutions.aap.org/article.aspx?articleid=2516254) discussed coding and billing of mental/behavioral health services provided by professionals working within the medical home. Expanding on coding for mental/behavioral health services, this article reviews codes introduced in the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule for 2017 for reporting the physician supervision of integrated mental and behavioral health services. Referred to as behavioral health integration (BHI), the services are team-based approaches to care that focus on integrative treatment of patients with medical and new or pre-existing mental or behavioral health conditions mainly in the primary care setting. Subspecialists, such as nephrologists and oncologists, who may serve as a patient’s medical home can also report BHI services when provided, but only one physician may report the services during an episode of care.
