Among the code changes applicable to surgical services in Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) 2018 are revision of the code for chemical cauterization of an umbilical granuloma (17250) and changes to codes for reporting bone marrow aspiration and/or biopsy (33820, 33821, and 38222).

Code 17250 is revised to remove reference to “sinus” or “fistula” in the code descriptor and instruct that this code is reported for chemical cauterization of granulation tissue or proud flesh. Additional parenthetical instructions following code 17250 advise that this code is not appropriate for chemical cauterization to achieve wound hemostasis and not reported in conjunction with active wound care management (97597, 97598, or 97602) of the same lesion.

To clarify that codes 38220 and 38221 (bone marrow aspiration and biopsy) represent diagnostic services, these codes are revised in 2018. In addition, new code 38222...
