Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) updates for implementation on January 1, 2018, include 3 significant changes to the pathology and laboratory section of note to pediatricians. These includes new codes for testing patients who have potentially been exposed to Zika virus and for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) detection by nucleic acid, amplified probe technique. Also, new codes split reporting of the 6-minute walk test and the prolonged test for bronchospasm.

Two new codes (86794 and 87662) are added to identify testing due to potential exposure to Zika virus. Codes are selected based on time since exposure. If immediately following potential exposure (<2 weeks: 87662) and for individuals with antibodies to the virus (≥2 weeks: 86794).
