Changes to the codes and documentation guidelines for the 2018 version of International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) were implemented on October 1, 2017. While new and revised codes are most notable, changes to the guidelines also affect how diagnoses are reported.

One change to the guidelines from 2017 that may be notable to pediatric practices is the added instruction for reporting related conditions.

In 2017, we are advised that the word with should be interpreted to mean “associated with” or “due to” when appearing in code titles, the alphabetic index, or an instructional note in the tabular list.
