Reporting code Z00.110 or Z00.111 for care of newborns during the birth admission was never the intended utilization of these codes. The International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) guideline for coding during the birth episode of care was carried over from International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) and predates the addition of ICD-9-CM codes for newborn health examinations in the first 7 days after birth and at 8 to 28 days (V20.31, V20.32). Codes V20.31 and V20.32 were added in 2009 as acceptance of a recommendation by the American Academy of Pediatrics for addition of codes for newborn health checks in support of recommendations that all otherwise healthy newborns that are discharged from the hospital less than 48 hours after delivery should be examined by their primary care pediatrician within 2 days of discharge.
