The official guidelines for International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) used in conjunction with instructions in the Alphabetic Index and Tabular List should guide diagnosis code selection. The guidelines are included in ICD-10-CM reference manuals and applications or may be downloaded as a PDF from https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/icd/icd10cm.htm. As with new and revised codes, revisions to the official guidelines for ICD-10-CM are implemented each October 1.
Even pediatricians who don’t assign diagnosis codes will benefit from awareness of ICD-10-CM guidelines that help drive documentation to support code assignment most clearly reflecting the patient presentation and/or reasons for services.
