The COVID-19 pandemic heightened the focus on provision of evaluation and management (E/M) services without a face-to-face (in-person) visit with a patient and/or caregiver. With multiple ways of providing care from a distance, it is important to know which codes apply to each type of service (ie, telemedicine, online digital, and telephone services). The Table provides an at-a-glance look at the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes for these services.

Medicare accepts certain Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System codes for certain E/M services provided remotely (eg, G2012, brief communication technology-based service, eg, virtual check-in). Other payers may additionally accept codes or have payment policy that includes instructions other than those of CPT. Administrative staff should research local payer guidance to determine the best options for individual practices.
