International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) includes many codes in Chapter 16 (P00P96) specific to conditions that originate in the perinatal period. Correct reporting of these codes follows the ICD-10-CM instructions in the alphabetic index and tabular list as well as additional instructions in the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting (current version, fiscal year 2021). However, there is often confusion about correct use of codes for conditions that typically begin or occur at specific ages (eg, neonatal period).

Most payers use automated edits to accept or reject charges for services based on the codes reported on a claim. Some may use edits that compare the age of the patient to an age range assigned to a reported ICD-10-CM code (eg, 0–28 days old) and generate a denial when the age of the patient conflicts with the assigned age range....
