Prolonged service codes allow a pediatrician or other qualified health care professional (QHP) to report services that require significant prolonged time beyond that which is typical or required for the primary service provided. Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) includes several categories of prolonged service codes that are reported based on the type of evaluation and management (E/M) or psychotherapy service provided and setting of the service (eg, office or other outpatient visit, outpatient consultation, inpatient visit). The required time on the date of service does not have to be continuous (eg, a pediatric hospitalist may combine the time of 2 separate visits to the patient on the same date).
