Epinephrine injection in a non-facility setting is reported with a code for the administration (injection) and a code for the medication (when supplied by the reporting physician or other qualified health care professional [QHP]). In a facility setting, administration of epinephrine is typically at the expense of the facility providing the medication and clinical staff and is not reported by the ordering physician or QHP.

When a physician or QHP provides the epinephrine and injection in a non-facility setting (eg, private practice), Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) code J0171 is reported for supplying the medication. Injection of the medication is reported with code 96372.

Adrenaline/epinephrine is labeled based on the amount of medication per volume (ie, 1-mg/10-mL solution or 0.1-mg/0.1-mL solution). HCPCS code J0171 is reported with 1 unit of service per 0.1 mg of epinephrine administered, as illustrated in Table 1.
