The COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) magnified the need for physicians and other qualified health care professionals (QHPs) to receive payment for evaluation and management (E/M) services that are offered outside of an in-person encounter and may not meet the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) definition of telemedicine (ie, communication with the patient and/or caregiver is not synchronous and/or via real-time audiovisual technology). CPT includes codes for reporting these services, although payer policies may or may not allow payment.

This article addresses the CPT codes and instructions for reporting telephone E/M services.
