What diagnosis code should I use for parental smoke exposure?

If the child is being exposed to tobacco and it is a risk factor that potentially may adversely affect the child’s health, then use V15.89, other specified personal history presenting hazards to health, other exposure.

If the child’s health is being directly affected by the tobacco exposure (the physician documents that the asthma is worse or exacerbated because of tobacco smoke exposure), then use 989.84, toxic effects of tobacco as a secondary diagnosis with the asthma code as the primary diagnosis.
