It’s that time of year again—time to review and update your superbill or encounter form and billing software. You need to delete old codes and replace them with new codes that are applicable to your practice.

Remember, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Transaction and Code Set Rule requires use of the code that is valid at the time of service; the grace period has been eliminated. While the 2006 International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) codes are effective beginning October 1, 2005, the 2006 Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes are effective as of January 1, 2006. If you do not use new valid codes for these dates of service, your claims will be denied. If you have not ordered your new 2006 ICD-9-CM and CPT reference materials, make a point to do so today!
