We were looking into reporting code 99058, office services provided on an emergency basis, for emergency office visits. Are there guidelines as to what constitutes an emergency?

This code may be used in addition to the appropriate-level evaluation and management (E/M) service when the patient’s condition, in the clinical judgment of the physician, warrants the physician’s interrupting the care of another patient to deal with the emergency. This code is not reported when the practice has urgent slots available and built into the schedule for these types of situations. Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) guidelines do not restrict the use of code 99058 to any specific conditions.

I saw a new patient who had just been adopted from Vietnam. I spent a good deal of time reviewing papers, educating the mother, ordering laboratory tests, etc. How do I bill for my time after reporting the preventive medicine visit?...
