Some good news for pediatricians in Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) 2006 is the recognition of care plan oversight services provided to patients in the home, domiciliary, or rest home (eg, assisted living facility).

Care plan oversight is either recurrent physician supervision of a complex patient or a patient who requires multidisciplinary care and ongoing physician involvement. These services are non–face-to-face and reflect the complexity and time required to supervise the care of the patient. The codes are reported separately from evaluation and management (E/M) office visits and are reported by the physician who has the predominant supervisory role in the care of the patient or is the sole provider of the services. These codes are an improvement over the existing care plan oversight codes, which limit use to patients in home health or hospice settings.
