Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes 36400 and 36410 are based on the age of the child and necessitate physician’s skill. They are not to be used when performing routine venipuncture; these procedures are not reported when performed as part of critical care services. Code 36400 is further differentiated by which vein is accessed (femoral or jugular vein).
To report routine venipuncture, use CPT code 36415, collection of venous blood by venipuncture. When collecting a capillary blood specimen (eg, finger, heel, ear stick), use CPT code 36416.
