A set of twins comes into your office and both require critical care. You (physician 1) and one of your partners (physician 2) each provide critical care for 1 hour on the 2 babies until the emergency medical service arrives to transport them to the hospital emergency department (ED). You (physician 1) follow the ambulance to the ED and perform intubation and lumbar punctures on both babies when they arrive in the ED. You continue to provide critical care in the ED until the babies are transported to another facility. Your total time spent in the ED with both babies is 2½ hours.

The services provided for each baby are billed separately by the physician who provided the services. As both physicians are in the same practice, the claims for services would be billed under the specific physician identification number (PIN) using the same practice tax ID number.
