The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) published the results of the 5-year review of the Medicare physician fee schedule in the June 29, 2006, Federal Register. As you are aware, the Medicare physician fee schedule is based on the Resource-Based Relative Value Scale (RBRVS). The revisions proposed under the 5-year review of the fee schedule include a reassessment of the work relative value units (RVUs) for many procedures and a proposal to make some revisions to the methodology used to calculate the practice expense RVUs.

Revisions to the work RVUs are proposed to be effective for services provided on or after January 1, 2007. In essence, the proposed revisions will result in a significant increase in the relative value of many evaluation and management (E/M) services.
