Although Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes have been available to report physician telephone management (99371–99373), payers have traditionally denied the services as noncovered. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and other payers have never assigned a relative value to the telephone management codes even though there are physician work and practice and malpractice expenses associated with the service. As you are aware, at least some telephone management time is considered inherent to evaluation and management (E/M) codes as part of the pre- and post-service work. Also, telephone services that are part of care plan oversight services provided to patients under the care of a home health agency, hospice, or home (99374–99380, 99339, 99340) are not separately reported.
