The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published the 2008 Medicare Resource-Based Relative Value Scale (RBRVS) on its Web site (www.cms.hhs.gov) on November 5, 2007, and in the Federal Register on November 27, 2007. This is important information to access because these relative value units (RVUs) are used by many Medicaid programs and third-party payers as a basis for their payment policies. Furthermore, this information should be used by practices to update fees and review payer contracts. Because of its importance, instructions for using the Medicare RBRVS and calculating payment rates are summarized again this year. In addition, the Medicare RVUs for some of the new 2008 Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes are listed.
