Current Procedural Terminology 2008 has developed a new Category I code to replace Category III code 0065T.

Code 99174 will be used to report ocular photoscreening to screen esotropia, exotropia, anisometropia, cataracts, ptosis, hyperopia, and myopia. This test may be useful when traditional acuity screening is not possible or is very time intensive. Code 99174 cannot be reported with codes 92002–99214 (general ophthalmologic services), 99172 (visual function screening), or 99173 (screening test of visual acuity, quantitative) because ocular screening is inherent to these services.

This code may be used to perform screening on an infant or young child who is not cooperative when trying to perform traditional acuity screens.
