Category III Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes are used to report emerging technology, services, and procedures. These temporary codes are developed for data collection purposes to substantiate the volume of usage or the emerging literature that substantiates the validity of the technology or performance of a new service or procedure. The services or procedures reported with Category III codes are not yet Food and Drug Administration approved, performed by only a few health care professionals across the country, or not yet proven to be clinically effective. Once approved by the CPT Editorial Panel, these codes are made available on the American Medical Association CPT Web site (www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/3113.html) in July and January of each year. This allows recognition and use of the codes prior to publication of the annual CPT manual.
