Major changes will be made in Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) 2009 for reporting neonatal services beginning January 1, 2009! The newborn codes are currently spread out in different areas of the evaluation and management (E/M) section of CPT. In anticipation of the upcoming 2009 changes, code 99477 (initial hospital care of the ill neonate, 28 days or younger, who requires intensive observation and monitoring) was placed at the end of the E/M chapter, making it even more difficult to locate all of the neonatal services. In CPT 2009 the normal newborn, delivery room management or resuscitation, neonatal and pediatric intensive and critical care, and pediatric critical care transport codes will be renumbered. In addition, 2 new codes will be introduced to report initial and subsequent inpatient pediatric critical care for the E/M of the critically ill young child 2 through 5 years of age.
