Is there a code we can use when we apply fluoride to a child's teeth?

The Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System Level II codes include a separate category of codes developed by the American Dental Association (ADA). These Current Dental Terminology (CDT®) codes (D0120–D9999) are for use by dentists and physicians. Code D1203 is used to report the topical application of fluoride (other than varnish), not including prophylaxis (eg, cleaning), for a child. Code D1206 is used to report the topical fluoride varnish, therapeutic application for patients with moderate to high caries risk.

It is important to check with payers to learn their specific policies addressing coverage and payment for these services.
