The following is from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Committee on Coding and Nomenclature and was printed in the May 2008 issue (29[5]:37) of AAP News. We thought it appropriate to reprint the article so that you are aware of the value and continuing successes of this committee and its devoted members.

“If you build it, they will come.”

In order for members to be paid for the services they provide, the proper codes need to be in place, along with appropriate valuations. In this regard, the AAP Committee on Coding and Nomenclature (COCN) can be a member's best friend.

COCN is charged with building the infrastructure needed to allow the seamless reporting of services from provider to payer. COCN's work is mired in acronyms such as CPT, ICD-9-CM, HCPCS and RBRVS, but it all boils down to codes and values for those codes.
