The American Medical Association (AMA) publication CPT Assistant has further clarified the neonatal and pediatric critical and intensive care supervision requirements as described in Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®). Furthermore, it addresses appropriate reporting guidelines for reporting neonatal critical or intensive care when performed with other services that may be provided by the same physician (or physician of the same specialty within the same group) on the same calendar day.

Under the heading “Inpatient Neonatal and Pediatric Critical Care Service,” CPT states that codes 99293–99296, 99298–99300, and 99477 are used to report services provided by a physician “directing the inpatient care” of a critically ill neonate or infant or a neonate or an infant who requires intensive observation, frequent interventions, and other intensive service. The code descriptors go on to state that the patient is under “constant observation by the health care team under direct physician supervision.”...
