Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) 2009 has provided very clear guidelines for reporting neonatal and pediatric inpatient services. While reading these guidelines, pull out your copy of the November 2008 AAP Pediatric Coding Newsletter™ (Vol 4, No. 2) or go to the archives at coding.aap.org and refer to the article, “CPT Code Changes for 2009.”

The Critical Care Services section of CPT 2009 (located in front of the hourly critical care codes 99291 and 99292) has been revised to incorporate the guidelines for reporting neonatal and pediatric critical care codes, thereby clarifying that the critical care definition is applicable to adults, neonates, and children....
