Many pediatricians are currently receiving incentive payments from some payers based on quality measures such as immunization rates or compliance with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) periodicity schedule. Other commercial payers have developed or are in the process of developing programs for incentive payments based on the performance measures established by national organizations (eg, National Committee for Quality Assurance, American Medical Association Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement). They are following in the steps of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Physician Quality Reporting Initiative program that currently allows Medicare providers to report certain quality measurements and receive supplemental payments.

Category II Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes are used to report performance measures. Using Category II codes provides an opportunity for pediatricians to closely monitor performance, patient compliance, and outcomes for many common conditions.
