Modifier 52 (reduced services) is used to report a service or procedure that is partially reduced or eliminated at the physician's discretion (ie, procedure or service was started but discontinued). Conversely, when a service or procedure is started and terminated because of a threat to the well-being or safety of the patient or extenuating circumstances, modifier 53 (discontinued procedure) is used. These modifiers are not reported when a scheduled procedure is electively canceled prior to the induction of anesthesia or surgical preparation of the patient in the operating suite.
