When a patient is seen for follow-up of attention–deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), can we report 90862 and an evaluation and management (E/M) code? If both services are reported, will a modifier be required?

Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code 90862 (pharmacologic management, including prescription, use, and review of medication with no more than minimal medical psychotherapy) is used to describe a face-to-face encounter with a patient to evaluate the efficacy of the medication and the needed dosage requirements, and to prescribe new medication or renew current medication for use until the next scheduled appointment. This code is primarily reported by a physician who is managing the medication for a patient who is in psychotherapy with a provider (eg, psychologist) who is not able to prescribe, when the patient's condition is treated with psychotropic drugs only, or when the physician is primarily managing the patient with medication.
