The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) continues to devote a tremendous amount of time, effort, and resources to provide pediatricians with information and assistance to promote correct coding, payment, and cost control for vaccine services. The AAP Committee on Coding and Nomenclature was successful in updating the 2009 Medicare Resource-Based Relative Value Scale (RBRVS) practice expense relative value units (RVUs) for immunization administration codes (90465–90474) through its work with the American Medical Association/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC). Based on RUC recommendations, clinical staff time for vaccine registry entry, refrigerator/freezer temperature log monitoring and documentation, and refrigerator/freezer alarm monitoring and documentation were added to the direct practice expense inputs in calculating the 2009 practice expense RVUs for immunization administration.
