In 2009, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes for inpatient neonatal and pediatric care were renumbered. There were several reasons for this change.

Although there are no changes to the code descriptors or to the assigned Medicare Resource-Based Relative Value Scale values for renumbered codes 99460–99472 and 99477–99480, many commercial payers and state Medicaid programs have incorrectly classified the renumbered codes as new codes. Unfortunately, payers that determine the codes to be new are applying payment methodologies that have resulted in a reduction of payment for the services.

CPT 2009 identified the renumbered codes with the bullet symbol () used to identify new codes because there is not currently a symbol to represent a renumbered code. In response to this, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has submitted a formal request to the American Medical Association to develop a new symbol that will identify a code as renumbered.
