The Medicare Resource-Based Relative Value Scale (RBRVS) physician fee schedule, implemented by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), has been in effect since January 1, 1992.

The American Medical Association (AMA)/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) has been providing the CMS with recommendations for updates and changes to the Medicare RBRVS since its inception. The RUC is composed of representatives from major medical specialty societies, the AMA, the American Osteopathic Association, the Health Care Professionals Advisory Committee, and the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) Editorial Panel. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) holds one of the permanent seats designated for medical specialty societies. Through the RUC, the AAP works to develop recommended values and inputs for new and revised pediatric CPT codes, and participate in the evaluation of recommended values and inputs for all other new and revised CPT codes.
