Aftercare codes are reported when the initial treatment of a disease or an injury has been performed and the patient requires continued care during the healing or recovery phase, or for the long-term consequences of the disease.

Aftercare V categories and codes that are most often reported by subspecialists are listed here. Primary care physicians will most often report the V58.3 series of codes. Aftercare codes may be reported when appropriate by any physician who is providing aftercare services (eg, a physician who did not perform the surgery provides other aftercare).

If the visit is to provide treatment for a current, acute disease or injury, the appropriate diagnosis code is used, but the aftercare code is not reported. However, there is an exception to this rule.
