For some period, you have encouraged the mother of a 6-year-old patient to stop smoking because of the adverse effects of secondhand smoke on the child. During a visit to evaluate and treat the child for acute exacerbation of asthma, the mother expresses her desire to stop smoking. Following treatment of the child, you spend 15 minutes with the mother discussing behavioral techniques and nicotine replacement. She is given a prescription and referred to a community support group. She is asked to return in 2 weeks for continued support and follow-up. The service and time spent is documented.
