When a child is referred to us from school for scoliosis screening, would the service be reported as a consultation? What diagnosis code should we report when the findings are negative and the child does not have scoliosis?

Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) 2010 clearly defines transfer of care versus a consultation. Therefore, the intent of the referral must be made clear. For example, if the intent of the school is for the physician to screen the child for scoliosis and take over the care of the abnormality or problem, if found, this is a transfer of care and a consultation would not be reported.
