As reported in the April 2010 issue (Vol 5, No. 7) of AAP Pediatric Coding Newsletter™, we will begin addressing International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) coding guidelines and the most frequently used codes to assist practices in their preparation for the conversion to ICD-10-CM. As we approach implementation of ICD-10-CM in 2013, keep in mind that like International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM), there will be new codes introduced and revisions to the existing codes each year.

The Table includes the degree of specificity of ICD-10-CM codes for just a few of the most commonly reported codes for diseases of the external and middle ear. Although there are nonspecific codes in ICD-10-CM, practices are encouraged to use the most specific codes now and in the future.
