On page 5 of the June 2010 AAP Pediatric Coding Newsletter™, please make the following correction to the first paragraph of the article, “ICD-9-CM Coding Conundrums”:
When you search under the Index to Diseases and Injuries for murmur, Still murmur is listed with a note to “omit code.” The same applies to benign, functional, insignificant, and vibratory murmurs. International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) guidelines stipulate that “omit code” is used to identify a term that is not reported.
The appropriate code would be 785.2 (undiagnosed cardiac murmurs). A Still murmur should not be reported. If a physician determines that the patient needs to be referred to a cardiologist, code V71.7 (observation for suspected cardiovascular disease not found) would be reported.
