The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Coding Hotline has received many questions about how to appropriately report postoperative care. The following should help answer the many questions and concerns.

Medicaid programs and commercial payers use Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) or Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) global period guidelines. Most payers assign global periods for CPT codes 10021–69990, whether their own or those assigned by the CMS.

Most payers deny any claim for services that are provided during the postoperative period. Appeal incorrect denials. Reporting surgical procedures and understanding the CPT surgical package definition and CMS global period guidelines has been addressed in several AAP Pediatric Coding Newsletter™ issues.
