The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has developed excellent resources to assist physicians in the transition from International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) to International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM). One such resource is an ICD-10 Implementation Guide for Small (1–5 physicians, single or multispecialty) and Medium Practices (6–20 physicians, single or multispecialty groups who are independent of a larger health care organization). This guide includes an introduction to ICD-10, guidelines for assessing your practice's readiness, evaluating and working with software vendors, implementation activities, and testing and transition to ICD-10. Included are several easy-to-use worksheets and tools.
