We have seen several patients whose parents were concerned they may have measles due to news stories about the increasing incidence of measles in the United States. What diagnosis code should we report if the patient does not have measles or another reason for the visit (eg, roseola)?

In the absence of signs or symptoms or other diagnoses, if the parents report a known exposure to measles or a local epidemic of measles has occurred, International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) code V01.79, contact or exposure to; other viral diseases, should be reported. Codes in category V01 are for patients who do not show any sign or symptom of a disease but have been exposed to it by close personal contact with an infected individual or are in an area where a disease is epidemic.
