If your practice includes spirometry or other pulmonary function testing (PFT), you probably are familiar with Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes for these tests and treatments. However, keeping up with changes to CPT instructions and National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits can make a big difference in the reporting of and payment for these services.
The instructions provided in CPT should be followed by all physicians and payers and are the first guidance on which codes are or are not reported together when performed in the same encounter. These instructions are usually found at the beginning of each section of codes and in parentheses following specific codes. An instruction for the section Pulmonary Diagnostic Testing and Therapies advises that certain services are included in spirometry when performed.
