While International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) includes a greater number of codes than International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM), this does not always mean more codes are necessary for reporting. In the “You Code It!” scenario, 4 ICD-9-CM codes were needed to report a preventive service provided to an 18-year-old patient (without abnormal findings) with 3 immunization administrations. Only 2 codes are required in ICD-10-CM.

A separate ICD-10-CM code, Z00.01, is provided for an encounter for general adult medical examination with abnormal findings. An additional code identifying the abnormal finding would be reported in addition to code Z00.01.ICD-10-CM does not include codes identifying the need for prophylactic immunization against specific conditions; procedure codes identifying the specific vaccine product reported in conjunction with code Z23 sufficiently provide the indication for the immunization.
