After giving a 1-year extension from the previous transition date of October 1, 2013, it appears that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will hold firm to the date of October 1, 2014, for transition to International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM). In response to a letter from the American Medical Association and other physician groups, Marilyn Tavenner, acting CMS administrator, responded in February 2013 stating that the 1-year extension offers physicians adequate time to train their coders, complete system changeovers, and conduct testing. In short, it appears that the transition date of October 1, 2014, stands. Will your practice be ready?
