Elsewhere in this newsletter, we have discussed that the codes found in Chapter 15 of International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) and Chapter 16 of International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) for conditions originating in the perinatal period may be used throughout the life of a patient as long as the condition still exists or is the reason for health care use. However, you may be receiving different information from payers, including denials of claims for services to patients older than 28 days whose diagnoses are conditions that originated in the perinatal period.
