In 2015, a new subsection of codes was added to the cardiovascular surgery section of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®). “Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) or Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) Services” includes 25 new codes for reporting the cannulation, initiation, daily management, and discontinuation of ECMO/ECLS services.
These new codes for ECMO/ECLS include many instructions for reporting. Here is an overview for reporting ECMO/ECLS codes for initiation and management and for insertion, replacement, repositioning, and removal of cannulas. Please see CPT 2015 for full instructions.
Initiation of ECMO/ECLS (33946, 33947) is reported by the physician who determines the necessary ECMO/ECLS device components, blood flow, gas exchange, and other necessary parameters to manage the circuit. When performed by the same physician, insertion of cannula(s) is reported separately.
Daily management of ECMO/ECLS is reported with code 33948 or 33949 based on the method of ECMO/ECLS (venovenous or venoarterial). Daily...
