This depends on the nature of the encounter. Traumatic fractures are reported with International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification codes 800–829 when the encounter is for active treatment (ie, surgical treatment, emergency department encounter, and evaluation and management by a new physician). For encounters following active treatment, such as those for follow-up visits, cast change, or removal of a fixation device, aftercare codes (subcategories V54.0, V54.1, V54.8, or V54.9) are reported.

Following the transition to International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification, traumatic fractures will be coded using an injury code (eg, S52.21X-, greenstick fracture of shaft of ulna) that describes that fracture with the seventh character identifying the type of encounter.
