Those familiar with the release and implementation schedule of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes for vaccines may look for the release of new codes on the first of January and July each year. Codes released on these dates are implemented for reporting 6 months later. However, the American Medical Association (AMA) posted a release of vaccine codes on November 1, 2014, with implementation dates for 2 vaccines posted as February 1, 2015.

This was possible due to a new code approval process developed to address situations in which a government health agency has identified the need for a vaccine to address an emergent health issue and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted an expedited review process for the vaccine. The AMA CPT Editorial Panel has approved a process to provide expedited release of new vaccine codes immediately or rapidly after approval.
